How many Gods does the Bible speak of?

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Deuteronomy 6:4 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Deuteronomy 6:1-9)

1Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. 3Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. 4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

5I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Isaiah 45:5-6 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Isaiah 45:1-7)

1Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; 2I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: 3And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. 4For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. 5I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. 7I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Think first

Read Deuteronomy 6:4 slowly. What do you think Moses wanted Israel never to forget?

Show the explanation

Our explanation

Moses gave Israel these words just before they entered the land: "The LORD our God is one LORD." It was a short sentence they could say every day and teach their children (Deuteronomy 6:7).

Centuries later, God says the same through Isaiah: "there is no God beside me."

Israel lived among nations that worshipped many gods. These passages draw a clear line: there is one God, and only one.

Check your understanding

When a scribe asked Jesus which commandment came first, what did Jesus quote?

Show the answer

Answer: "Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord."

Jesus answered with the words of Deuteronomy 6:4, the same words Moses gave Israel (Mark 12:29). Mark 12:29
